Great Missenden to Wendover hike - via South Bucks Way, Beacon Hill & Coombe Hill!
Rating: 3.8 / 5
Distance: 10 miles
A brilliant hike in the Chilterns National Landscape. Starting at Great Missenden railway station I made my way north along the South Bucks Way. I left the South Bucks Way at Hampdenleaf wood and walked through the village of Dunsmore and joined the "Coombe Hill and Chequers trail", which had great views of Chequers. Chequers is a country house of the prime minster, and there are many signs saying you can not go any further towards the house. The signs also say there are police dogs and CCTV cameras.
The next point of interest on route was Beacon Hill which has an amazing view of Ellesborough's church. It's very steep getting to the top of the hill but well worth the short climb. Beacon Hill according to historic England was the site of a norman motte and bailey castle.
Coombe Hill was the next major point of interest. A 260 meter hill that has an impressive monument at the top. The monument was first built in 1904 to remember 148 men from Bucks who lost their lives in the Second Boer War.
Wendover and Great Missenden are both on the Chiltern Railways railway line. You can either do this route by parking at Great Missenden and getting the train back from Wendover at the end of the hike. It's only a 6 minute train journey. Alternatively, this hike would be ideal for anyone living in London or close to a station on the Chiltern railway line.
I have made a short scenery video below if interested. Cheers :)
