Chesham to Tring / Marsworth - via Cholesbury Windmill & Tring Park!
Rating: 3.8 / 5
Distance: 14.7 miles
A 14 mile hike in the Chiltern Hills. Starting the adventure at Chesham railway station I visited the high street and popped into a local bakery called Darvells for a few pastries that would keep me going for the journey.
I made my way up a hill close to Chesham Railway Station that has a great view of the town. There is a nice tree up the hill - that has lots of ribbons attached to the branches. After I walked through Chesham, this part wasn't very interesting to be honest. However, I wanted to try a different route out and once I got off-road again I was pleased. I saw another good view of Chesham on the way out.
The paths were all new to me this side of Chesham.
I saw a large deer up close on a footpath. I was on the phone at the time so I didn't get a photo of it unfortunately!
Cholesbury Windmill was the next big highlight of the trip. There is also a popular pub near the windmill if anyone is interested called The Full Moon. However the footpath just before the windmill was very nice and worth going this way. There were donkeys, horses and sheep. I managed to get several photos of the animals in the foreground with the windmill in the background which I was pleased at 😃 made up for missing the shot of the deer earlier on!
Went through woodlands and farmland and the next point of interest was Tring Park. A very picturesque park, especially later on in the evening when the sun was lower. Tring Park had wooden chainsaw carvings, a great view of Tring and the surrounding area at a viewpoint. There is also a monument and summerhouse in Tring park that are worth seeing.
After I walked to Tring High Street, going past the Natural History Museum - which was sadly closed when I got there. It was nice seeing the old properties in the town. Some good architecture in Tring. I then walked through some not very interesting streets before reaching the Tring Arm of the Grand Union Canal. After I came to Marsworth Reservoir and got a lift home from the car park.
However for anyone looking to do this hike for your information the nearest train station is an extra 2.6 miles (Tring Railway Station) that has trains to London. Unfortunately there are no buses back to Chesham on this route.
Cheers!
