Aylesbury to Ivinghoe Beacon hike - via the Aylesbury Arm, Aldbury & Ashridge Estate

Rating: 4.0 / 5

Distance: 14.5 miles

This hike started at Aylesbury Railway Station. I had caught the Chiltern Railways train to Aylesbury. I visited Aylesbury's town centre briefly - checking out the clock tower and market. After this I headed towards the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal. On route I saw some modern art sculptures that I hadn't see before that looked pretty neat.

The Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal is initially all surfaced (probably about a mile or two). I was warned a few times that the path gets very muddy later on by walkers I met on the canal. Apparently the council run out of money to surface it all. It had just rained the night before and it was very muddy! My boots were getting slightly stuck in the mud at times. Nevertheless, it was still a cracking adventure.

Soon after reaching the main Grand Union Canal I arrived at Marsworth Reservoirs. It started raining heavily around here so I didn't stay for long. I headed down the Grand Union Canal to Tring Station - where I hiked up towards the picturesque village of Aldbury.

I got some tasty snacks at the village store in Aldbury and then headed up to the Ashridge estate

The route then went via the Bridgewater monument, Steps Hill and ended at Ivinghoe Beacon (a 233 metre hill & the site of a hillfort dating back to late Bronze Age / early Iron Age)

You can catch the 61 / 62 Red Eagle bus back to Aylesbury from Ivinghoe village for those wanting to do this hike via public transport. However, my father was kind enough to give me a lift back from Ivinghoe Beacon car park
